In this part of my Home Gym Buyers Guide series I go through the in and outs of what to look for when choosing what type of weight plates you want for your home gym. I cover the basics on plate dimensions, type along with pros and cons. A wide variety of weight plates are available on finance from Savage Strength, a company who I have used before and highly recommend.

Main points to consider when buying your weight plates include:

  • 450mm is the competition standard width. This means that bar height will be correct when performing deadlifts. A lot of plates are smaller than this, usually 400mm, this means the bar height will be lower than usual.

  • Bumper plates are usually thicker than cast iron plates so will take up a lot more space on the bar. If you lift a lot of weight, these might not be a good idea for you.

  • Bumper plates are less damaging to your floor / surface and are much quieter.

  • Tri Grip plates may be susceptable to cracking if dropped from height.

  • Weight plates can be found relatively cheap on second hand sales sites / groups.

Unless you are paying seriously top dollar, there is always a tolerance when it comes to the weight printed on the plate. For example, some 20kg plates may weigh up to 5% +/- in weight. So maybe 21kg or 19kg. Now this would help if they all weighed 21kg because it would mean you are stronger than you think you are but this works both ways, you may be training with 19kg plates and lets say you use 10 in total = 190kg +20kg bar = 210kg weight lifted vs 220kg if the plates weighed 20kg exactly. Very big difference. However chances of the plates all being under is very low, my plates are all very close to 20kg or slightly over. You can always weigh them to be sure.

Thanks for watching!
