The Biggest LIAR in the Gym

This video was brought on by my recent trip to the commercial gym to do some cardio which was namely pushing the prowler about and running on the treadmill.

It came to my attention something that I have noticed several times over the years but never really thought much of... people cheating themselves on the running machine / treadmill.

How do they cheat themselves? Well, the main group of people tend to be the ones who read into power walking and figured that they could burn lots of calories on a treadmill by doing the same thing on an incline setting. This would certainly be true if it wasn't for one little detail... they hang onto the handles for dear life whilst their lower bodies flap around leisurely.

You don't get much out when you put little in i'm afraid. There is a poster up in the gym currently that advertises their new high incline treadmill, stating that you will BURN 5X MORE CALORIES JUST BY WALKING.... WOW AWESOME YEAAAAAAH!!!

I have been on that high incline treadmill at full 30% incline at 4kph... it is ridiculously hard. After a minute I was struggling to keep up with it. However, if I was holding on to the handles and supporting my body weight I have no question that I could stay on it for an hour easily.

So that hour that I spend holding onto the handles and plodding along on what is technically the hardest setting, by the end of it the machine will have thought I have performed a full hour at that same blistering intensity I experienced by NOT HOLDING ON...

The result?

The machine would probably give me a read out in the very high hundreds, close probably to a thousand calories being expended. You and I should both know that this is bullshit. If you believe different and that you have actually performed the same level of exertion as someone that wasn't holding on then you're a fool and you're only cheating yourself.

If you do this, I encourage you to try and do your same workout but without holding on and report back how it killed you. If you are one of those people that swear you cannot lose weight even though you "burn thousands of calories" at the gym and you do this kind of trick, this is more than certainly your reason why.
