Cytosport Monster Amino Review

I've had a sample sized tub of Cytosport Monster Amino for a while now. I picked it up as part of a JackedPack. This is Fruit Punch flavour, has 10 servings and states that it is for use pre, during and post workout. If you have followed me a while you will know that when it comes to BCAA products, I don't really see a neccesity in them, I just use them during intense training sessions if I have them.

Each serving delivers 35kcal along with a fat chunk of L-Leucine, L-Isoleucine and L-Valine. There's also the standard aminos alongside these and 1g of Citrulline Malate. The addition of Citrulline Malate is to aid with blood flow and pump, although this has only really been shown to benefit when at a much higher dose. Product Claims

  • Increased Protein Synthesis

  • Increase in Nitric Oxide (Pumps)

  • Increased Metabolic Reaction

Now as I have mentioned already, I am very skeptical towards BCAA products as in most situations, the person using them usually has a diet high in protein which kind of nulifies the need for a BCAA product... your body will have all the amino acids needed in a massive supply. So really, if you have a high protein diet, you should be benefitting from these claims already anyway.

The product itself is an off pink powder and takes a bit of effort to mix it properly. I always use a shaker cup with a blender ball and even with that there tends to be quite a build up of foam with bits floating in it. This will be the L-Leucine, it's a pain to mix. The taste of the product isn't great. It doesn't really have a decent "fruit punch" flavour to it and is pretty bland, also the taste of the BCAA's aren't masked very well. Verdict

For me, this isn't a BCAA product I would buy. There are far better tasting products on the market if you are looking for a BCAA drink, a few examples are Scivation Xtend or GAT Muscle Martini.

I have never experienced any additional "pump" from using this product but as stated earlier, I wouldn't expect to from such a low dose of Citrulline Malate... it's more of a "tick the box" ingredient I think in this application. Full Product Info on CytoSport Website
